Evening and weekend appointments

Elmwood Family Doctors provides an ‘Enhanced Access’ service, which means we are open later than usual on some evenings – appointments are available at Holmfirth on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening until 7.30pm.

From 1st October 2022, patients will also be able to book appointments with a range of clinicians on a Friday evening (6.30pm to 8.00pm) and on a Saturday (9.00am – 5.30pm). This will be provided at the Primary Care Networks (PCNs) Enhanced Access hubs – these are Oaklands Health Centre, Huddersfield Road, Thongsbridge, HD9 3TS or Skelmanthorpe Family Doctors, 313 Wakefield Road, Denby Dale, HD8 8RX.

First Contact Physiotherapy

A First Contact Physio (FCP) is an experienced physiotherapist who has the advanced skills necessary to assess, diagnose and recommend appropriate treatment or referral for musculoskeletal (MSK) problems on a patient’s first contact with healthcare services e.g. when they visit their GP surgery.

Patients with MSK complaints can be booked in to see an FCP by a GP receptionist or other healthcare professional. An FCP offers expert MSK assessment and diagnosis, however, is also integrated within the multi-disciplinary team in each GP practice. If appropriate, an FCP may prescribe a programme of exercises, refer for blood tests or X-ray, administer steroid injections, utilise local services or refer a patient to an appropriate secondary health service e.g. rheumatology or orthopaedics.

Flu Clinics

Following a national change to the flu programme, Flu clinics will begin in October this year (previously September) on a variety of dates and we will be offering both Flu and COVID boosters in these clinics;

Thursday 3rd October 2024 at Holmfirth and Meltham

Friday 4th October 2024 at Holmfirth

Tuesday 8th October 2024 at Holmfirth and Meltham

Wednesday 9th October 2024 at Holmfirth

Saturday 12th October 2024 at Holmfirth

Saturday 19th October 2024 at Meltham

If you are unable to make all of the above clinics, we will have additional appointments available at a later date.

Who is eligible this year?

Everyone aged over 65 years, as well as those that have a certain health condition, the extremely vulnerable (also known as immunocompromised patients) and their close contacts, pregnant patients and carers. Click here for more details on who is eligible. Please note this may change year-by-year.

Please don’t attend if you feel unwell or you have a high temperature, a new continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. Please visit NHS.uk for a full list of COVID symptoms.

Why do I have to wait until October for my flu vaccine?

There has been a national change to the Flu programme this year and most eligible adults will now be offered a flu vaccine from early October. This is because the latest scientific evidence shows that protection from the flu vaccine decreases over time in adults. It is better to have the vaccine closer to when flu typically circulates in the winter months.
