Planning a trip abroad? Make sure you’re protected!

NHS Travel Consultations
We offer travel health consultations for NHS eligible vaccinations. If you’re planning to travel abroad, it’s important you get the right health advice before you go — ideally at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel.
What We Offer
As part of the NHS, we provide travel consultations to advise on:
- Recommended and required vaccinations for your destination(s)
- Preventative measures (e.g. bite prevention, food & water safety)
- Travel health advice tailored to your destination, activities, and medical history
We can provide the following NHS vaccines free of charge if they are needed for your travel:
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio (DTP – a combined booster)
- Cholera (in certain cases)
Booking an Appointment
Please call 01484 943000 and speak to one of our receptions. Let them know you need to book in for a travel assessment appointment. These appointments are with one of our practice nurses and usually last up to 30 minutes.
If you are travelling with one or more family members, please read the Family Travel Consultations section below.
Family Travel Consultations
We are happy to offer combined travel consultations for families. The appointment will take 30 minutes, plus an extra 10 minutes for each additional family member (e.g., mum, dad, child 1 and child 2 would be a 60-minute appointment.)
Please note:
- All family members must be present for the start of the earliest booked appointment as this is where the travel assessment and advice will take place.
- By attending a combined appointment, all individuals must be comfortable with relevant medical records being accessed and discussed in the presence of others. This may include vaccination history and relevant significant medical conditions that could affect travel or vaccination recommendations
- If a member of the family prefers a private consultation, please let us know in advance so that a separate appointment can be booked (see the ‘Booking an Appointment’ section, above).
Private Travel Vaccinations
Some vaccines are not covered by the NHS and must be arranged privately. Whether you need these may depend on:
- The region or country you are visiting
- The type of activities you’ll be doing (e.g., trekking, working in healthcare, staying in rural areas)
- The length and nature of your stay
Examples of commonly required private vaccines include:
- Rabies
- Yellow Fever
- Japanese Encephalitis
- Hepatitis B
- Meningitis ACWY
If any of these are needed, you will need to get them from a private travel clinic.
Additional Travel Health Advice
Sun Protection
Protecting yourself from the sun is important to prevent sunburn, heat exhaustion, and long-term skin damage. Please visit the NHS website for advice on how to stay safe in the sun.
Bite Prevention
Insect bites can transmit serious diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Zika virus. To reduce your risk:
- Use insect repellent containing at least 20–50% DEET on exposed skin
- Wear long sleeves and trousers, especially in the evenings
- Sleep under a mosquito net if accommodation is not well screened
- Consider antimalarial medication if advised
