Weight-loss injections in primary care

Posted on:

From 23 June 2025, Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®), an injectable weight-loss drug, is being introduced in a small number of GP practices as part of wider support for people living with obesity.

West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board responsible for commissioning services in Kirklees, have not yet rolled this out to GP practices in our area. Once it is available in Kirklees, eligible patients will be contacted directly by their GP practice or the NHS – there is no need to contact your GP practice.

It is only available to a limited number of patients in the first year, based on strict NHS criteria. This is part of a carefully phased rollout based on the latest guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Eligibility includes a BMI of 40 or more and at least four serious weight-related health conditions

Patients must also take part in a structured support programme (wraparound care) including healthy eating and physical activity

Find out more about who may be eligible and how to access tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) on West Yorkshire ICB’s questions and answers page.

If you do not meet the current criteria and want to lose weight, the Kirklees Wellness Service may be able to help you. This is for people who have a BMI of 27.5 or more. Please visit Kirklees Wellness Service for further information about their offer.
